Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut Review

Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is yet another game this month that is getting a console remaster. Q.U.B.E. is a rather interesting game where you wake up in a white room and have to navigate through different rooms, all made of cubes. As you get farther along, you start to come across different colors of cubes, each with their own action. An interesting idea, but is it really worth it? Read on to find out.

As I started playing Q.U.B.E. the first thing I noticed was how good the graphics are. Now, keep in mind that this is an indie game, so it isn’t up to par with some big name games, but you should really take a look at some of the screenshots throughout this review and see for yourself how good it looks.

The next thing I really liked about it was the puzzles. This is a first-person puzzle game, and it does a really good job at it. Once you get far enough into the game, the puzzles get really difficult. It takes a lot of focus to figure out how to complete each one, and every puzzle you complete has a very rewarding feel. There weren’t really any drops in difficulty, where you feel like you’re getting a break. It just does what a puzzle game’s supposed to do, challenge you.

The third aspect of Q.U.B.E. that I was impressed with was the difficulty curve. Like I said, the puzzles are very difficult, but they don’t start out that way. They give you time to adjust to the basic controls, which I should mention they don’t teach you and have to be learned through the in-game menu, and simple puzzles before throwing extremely difficult puzzles at you.

The story has also improved since the original release back in 2012. This isn’t something that usually happens in remasters, so it was pretty cool to see this. The developers brought in Rob Yescombe, an award-winning writer, to fix up the story, which was one of the main problems with the original release.

So, those were a few things that I really liked about Q.U.B.E. But even with all those, I’m still not sure if I can justify a purchase if you’ve already bought the original game on PC. Even with the new story, the puzzles are still pretty much the same, and that’s really what this game is about.

Verdict

Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut is a great addition to my console library, however, like I mentioned above, if you already have the game on PC the upgrades really aren’t enough to justify a new purchase. But if you haven’t played it yet, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
